Hello. In this short video you will find information about the regulations and options for placing ashes at sea. At Cenizas Mediterráneo we have different authorised points and different boats all along the Mediterranean coast of Catalonia, the Levante region and the Balearic Islands.

The activity lasts approximately one hour, although in any case you will have all the time you need to say goodbye to your loved ones. The distance from the port at which we will place the urn is approximately 3 miles, equivalent to about 5 km.

The service is available every day of the year, subject to booking and confirmation on our part 48 hours before the agreed day, to ensure that sea conditions are the most suitable for your safety and comfort. If we are forced to postpone the activity, it will be duly rescheduled, by mutual agreement with you, to another date that suits you.

As for the urn, it is important to bear in mind that it must be biodegradable and approved. If you wish to leave flowers, only petals are allowed, never stems or bouquets. If you would like music during the ceremony, all our boats have a Bluetooth audio system that can be paired with mobile devices.

Once the ceremony is over, Cenizas Mediterráneo will email you a keepsake with the exact location of the spot where we placed the ashes.

It is important to remind you that placing ashes at sea is a regulated activity and must be notified to the authorities before the trip. Failing to do so exposes you to serious penalties. At Cenizas Mediterráneo we hold all the authorisations needed to carry out the activity and we take care of the necessary paperwork. If you have your own boat and need authorisation to place the ashes at a specific location, after a brief assessment of whether the site meets certain requirements, we will handle the paperwork so that you can fulfil your wish.

Finally, we would like to remind you that we offer two services: in person, where up to 10 people can come aboard, and remote, where the Cenizas Mediterráneo team takes care of the whole process on your behalf. In both cases you will receive the keepsake with the coordinates where we placed the ashes. For any other questions, please do not hesitate to contact us by phone. Thank you.

What is not included in the price? What about cremation?

The price is for the service of placing the ashes at sea: it does not include cremation, which is handled by the funeral home or crematorium of your choice. If you are looking for how much a cremation costs, that amount is set by the company that carries it out and is not part of this service.

Before asking for quotes, it is worth comparing the same things across all of them. These are the points worth checking:

  • Whether the price includes the paperwork with the authorities and the responsible declaration.
  • Whether the urn is biodegradable and certified.
  • How long the ceremony lasts and how far from the port it takes place.
  • Whether you receive a certificate with the exact coordinates of the spot.
  • What happens if bad weather forces the trip to be postponed.
